Let's start with the basics..

Most people know what extensions are, but toppers- not so much. I like to think of toppers as a hair extension for the top of your head. Watch this video to find out exactly what a topper is.

So who wears toppers? The short answer, anyone! Our toppers are specially designed for ladies who have thinning hair or hair loss to cover the crown area of the head. But this doesn't mean toppers are just for women with hair loss! We find so many women just want to add more volume for that super model look, without having to style their own hair to achieve that! (Did I mention that you only need to style the piece ~once a month. Um, HELLO, lazy girls' dream!)

And why is human hair so expensive?

Let's talk first about synthethic hair toppers. Synthetic hair toppers are, as the name suggests, made from synthetic hair. They're usually made from a combination of different plastics. Synthetic hair toppers are less expensive than human hair, and this is usually why people will opt for synthetic hair. Although the price tag is friendlier on your wallet, most synthetic hair pieces will last you only 4-6 months. They come pre-styled (meaning you can't use heat styling to curl/straighten the piece) cannot be coloured; which some may see as a benefit as you don't need worry about styling yourself, BUT, others prefer to have more options with their hair piece. There's also a lot of variation within synthetic pieces; some may last you longer than others but the maximum is usually 6 months.

Why a human hair piece may be worth the investment.

Human hair toppers are a lot more versatile than synthetic toppers. With a human hair topper you can cut, dye and style the piece however you'd like! Human hair toppers are a higher price point, but they last much longer than synthetic. Human hair toppers also tend to look a lot more realistic and are easier to blend in with your own hair. Synthetic wigs have a shiny coating to the hair which is different to your own hairs' texture and appearance, whereas human hair toppers blend naturally in with your own hair.

Again, there's variation in quality of different human hair pieces. You may have seen the word 'remy' thrown around during your google searches. When people say 'remy human hair' that means that the cuticle of the hair on the piece all goes the same direction (just like your own hair does). Non-remy pieces are more prone to knotting and matting. But it doesn't just stop at remy! There are many different 'grades' of hair, some will last you longer than others. Some lower grade human hair pieces may only last you 6 months! Some companies coat their hair in silicone, which gives a shinier, glossier look to the hair, but after a few washes this silicone comes off which may create issues with matting and knotting. If you're buying a human hair piece, be sure to ask what quality the hair is. When considering lower cost human hair pieces keep in mind that low cost usually means either quality suffers, or people suffer.

There are three main points to consider when purchasing a topper.

There are three things you need to think about when you're trying to find your first piece; Cap size, length and colour.

Let's start with cap size! Cap size isn't as scary of a question as you might think. Cap size isn't to do with how big or small your head is (this is important for wigs, not toppers), it's to do with where the clips will be sitting on your head. You don't want to be clipping into any sensitive areas!

Ok, so now you know everything about cap size, let's talk about length. Different hair companies may measure pieces slightly differently, so it's good to check how the pieces are measured at the company you're purchasing from.
