How Do I Tell Someone I'm Wearing a Wig?!

You're rocking your new topper or wig, living your best life when out of the blue your co-worker compliments you hair.

Fear. Panic.

Can you relate?

When I first started wearing alternative hair, I was constantly paranoid that someone would notice that my hair was not my own.

Even a compliment on my hair felt like my whole world was falling in on me.

In reality, they probably just thought my hair looked good.

But to my anxiety-filled brain, 'your hair looks lovely today' translated directly to 'why are you wearing a wig?!!'.

Although most likely the compliment is just a compliment, it's good to be prepared for hair-related questions/comments when you're wearing haif for the first time.

This is your survival guide. This blog post is your an answer bank for responses to different situations you may get into as a new hair-wearer. We've ranked each response as a different level. Not ready to share your wig-wearing with the world? Choose Level 1 responses. Confident in sharing your story? Go for Level 3 or 4.

Hair Compliments

First things first. What do you say if someone compliments your hair. Here's how you can respond to "You hair looks great!", "I love your hair colour!" and "You hair looks so thick and luscious."

Level 1: "Thanks so much, I just washed it. I love your hair too! Also, [change subject]"

Level 2: "Thanks so much, I saw my stylist last week."

Level 3: "Thanks! Guess what? It's actually not my real hair! It's a topper/wig"

Did you change your hair?

A lot of the time, if you've matched your wig/topper to your usual hair colour, people aren't going to notice anything different. But, let's say you're usually a brunette and come into work with a blonde wig on, you might get a few questions! Here's how you can respond.

Level 1: "Yeah, thought it was time for a new look. Anyway, [change subject]"

Level 2: "Yeah, I thought it was time for something different! I've been experimenting with my hair recently."

Level 3: "Yes! I got new hair extensions. What do you think?"

Level 4: "Yes, that's why I love wearing wigs/toppers! I get to change my hair whenever I want."

Wow, is that your real hair?!

Don't let this comment scare you. Firstly, this is a super rare situation to be in. Most people will have no CLUE you're wearing hair. But, there are a few hair detectives out there. Here's what you can say if someone comments on your hair directly.

Level 1: "Oh yeah it's been looking thicker since I last went to my stylist. [Change subject]"

Level 2: "Kind of! I've got extensions in my hair as well."

Level 3: Nope! This is actually a wig/topper. It just makes my hair look so much nicer. I love it, what do you think?"

Pro tip: Always have a subject change in your backpocket. My favourite is to throw a compliment back on them or focus on something they've been up to lately.

You could ask them how their kids have been, compliment their outfit or ask for some advice on a completely unrelated subject. Be prepared with a quick way to change the subject so that the attention is on your hair no longer than you want it to be.

Although to us these comments can feel HUGE, to the people asking them, they're likely a throwaway comment and they've forgotten about your answer ten minutes later. Remember, that people don't care about your life nearly as much as you do.

You've got this!
