“Why do you wear hair toppers and wigs?”
I used to hate this question so much. Why? Because it usually came with other questions or comments as well.
“Is it because you don’t have hair?”
I HATED discussing my hair loss, and I didn’t want to have to explain my hair loss to some random person I met at a party. I felt like everyone felt entitled to a full run down of my medical history 😅
“You don’t need to wear that. You should love yourself the way you are.”
You know what? There was a time I didn’t love myself because of the way my hair looked. It SUCKED. And wearing hair gave me some moments of relief from that self-hate. Sure, self-love is great. Sure, self-acceptance is great. But, that's not going to magically happen over night. Especially if you're dealing with something like hair loss. So if wearing a bit of extra hair helps me reach self-acceptance, so what?
And through wearing hair I actually learnt to love myself with AND without the topper on my head. If I never wore hair, I don’t think I would have gotten to this place (or it would have taken A LOT longer). Unless you wear hair toppers or wigs yourself, you won't understand the magical phenomenon of how hair-wearing makes you feel self-love. Wearing hair toppers and wigs allows you the space to grieve, without worrying about your external appearance. They give you space to do the inner work.
“What else about you is fake?”
Ugh. First of all, none of your business what I do with MY body. Second of all, wearing hair isn’t about vanity, it’s an act of self-love. Don't let anyone else dictate to you how you should look.
Everyone has a different reason for wearing hair. And you don’t owe ANYONE an explanation.
