Cures for Hair Loss: Laser Cap Therapy

Hey Hair Loss Queen!

I know your google search history. And I KNOW that 'cures for hair loss' is in the top 10. And there's a lot of information out there when it comes to 'cures'. So we're doing a deep dive. Let's start with Laser Cap Therapy.

What is Laser Cap Therapy?

Laser cap therapy also known as red light therapy, is essentially a helmet which, when wearing, uses low-level lasers to stimulate hair growth on the scalp.

The laser cap emits light at a specific wavelength, usually around 650-670 nanometers. This red light penetrates the outer layer of skin, reaching the hair follicles beneath. The theory is that the light photons boost the energy production in cells, rejuvenating dormant hair follicles and promoting the hair growth phase (anagen phase).

Most manufacturers and professionals recommend using the laser cap for about 20-30 minutes, multiple times a week. Consistency is crucial; sporadic treatments might not yield the desired results.

Does Laser Cap Therapy Work to Grow Your Hair Back?

Like most treatments for hair loss, the answer is yes and no.

There have been quite a few studies on laser cap therapy. One study found that using laser caps helped to push hair into the anagen phase aka the growth phase. Another study published in 2016 found that laser cap therapy was no more effective in promoting hair growth than placebo or control groups.

If you're considering using laser cap therapy, there's no guarantee it will work for you. There's still so many unknowns about hair loss and what causes it and until we have more answers there, finding a 100% effective treatment will be difficult. Depending on your unique genetics and situation laser cap may or may not be effective for you.

Is Laser Cap Therapy Safe?

Yes, overall laser cap therapy is considered safe. Most people won't experience any side effects from using a laser cap. However, there are some things to consider...

  1. UV-Free Treatment: One of the significant advantages of LLLT is that it doesn't employ harmful UV rays. This factor distinguishes it from other treatments or devices that expose users to potential skin damage and risks associated with UV radiation.

  2. Mild Side Effects: Most individuals tolerate LLLT well. However, as with any treatment, reactions can vary from person to person. Some might experience minor side effects like scalp irritation, itching, or slight warmth during or after the treatment. These symptoms are generally transient and resolve on their own.

  3. Compatibility with Other Treatments: LLLT is often used in conjunction with other hair growth products, like minoxidil or finasteride. It's always essential to inform your dermatologist about any medications or treatments you are currently using to ensure no adverse interactions.

  4. Overuse Considerations: While LLLT is safe, like any treatment, overdoing it is not recommended. Sticking to the manufacturer's guidelines is essential. Overexposure doesn't necessarily translate to faster or better results and may lead to increased side effects.

  5. Eye Safety: Even though the lasers used are low-level, direct exposure to the eyes should be avoided. Some devices come with protective eyewear or are designed to minimize any risk of direct eye exposure.

  6. Special Populations: Pregnant women, individuals with certain medical conditions, or those taking photosensitizing medications should consult with their physician before starting LLLT. While the treatment is generally safe, it's better to ensure it's appropriate for every individual's unique situation.

In summary, while LLLT is a promising and largely safe modality for hair growth, potential users should always be informed about both the benefits and potential risks. Like all therapies, it's most effective when used correctly and in the right context. Always prioritize professional guidance before embarking on any new treatment journey.

How Much Does Laser Cap Therapy Cost?

The price of laser cap therapy can vary a lot. You can find some on places like Amazon for less than $300, but most run at about $1,500-$3,500 Aussie dollars ($1,000-$2,300 US dollars). They're definitely not a cheap option, especially for something which isn't guaranteed to work.... (that's why we much prefer toppers and wigs 😉).

Kim's Experience

Laser Cap Therapy was a BIG part of Kim's search for a solution. She spent a whole year using a laser cap 30 minutes per day, 3 days per week. When I say she was committed to this solution, I mean it. She took her cap with her EVERYWHERE. Holidays, sleepovers, EVERYWHERE! After a year of using this cap religiously, her hair loss was the same... and it had continued to shed. Plus, she ended the year $3,500 poorer. Her mum (who also has androgenic alopecia) still uses her laser cap today. Not because it's helping to grow her hair back, but because she finds it keeps the hair she does have stronger.
