Can Stress Cause Hair Loss?

Stress. It is something that a lot of us experience. How does it relate to Hair loss?

Stress and hair-loss often go hand-in-hand. A never-ending cycle for some. Stress may come from life changing events, grief, hormone imbalances, nutritional deficiencies or psychological stress. However, we have good news! If you are able to get your stress under control then hair loss due to stress is usually temporary.

How does it cause Hair Loss?

Stress can cause hair loss in multiple ways:

1. Disrupts Hair Growth Cycle: Stress can disrupt the normal hair growth cycle, leading to a condition called Telogen Effluvium. This condition causes more hair follicles than usual to enter the resting phase, leading to excessive hair shedding. It is normal to lose around 100 hairs day. However, when you start to lose around 300 or more hair strands a day it may be due to stress.

2. Hormonal Imbalance: Prolonged stress can also cause hormonal imbalances in the body, such as an increase in cortisol levels. It may also be brought on by coming off of birth control.

3. Nutritional Deficiencies: Chronic stress can also deplete the body of essential nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, that are needed for healthy hair growth. This can lead to brittle, weak hair that is prone to breakage and falling out.

4. Hair-Pulling Disorder: In some cases, stress can trigger a hair-pulling disorder called Trichotillomania, where individuals pull out their own hair in response to anxiety or stress.

How do I know my hair loss is stress-related?

It is important to note that while stress can be a contributing factor to hair loss, it is not the only factor. Genetics, hormonal imbalances, and certain medical conditions also play a role. If you are experiencing hair loss, it is important to speak with a healthcare professional to determine the underlying cause and develop an appropriate treatment plan for your stress.
