It's wash day! In this blog post, you'll find our favourite Lusta-approved shampoos and conditioners to use on your Lusta Hair wig or topper.
Although all our pieces are made with highest quality human hair, the hair does react differently to bio hair. As the wig or topper isn't getting the natural oils from your scalp or replenishing, it needs slightly different care than bio hair does.
Let's talk about the best products to use on your topper or wig (and which products to avoid.
Before choosing your products
- The below list includes some of our favourite hair products to use on toppers and wigs. It's important to note that Lusta recommends specific products within each brand. Certain ranges or products from brands are better to use on toppers and wigs than others. We highly recommend sticking to the specific product recommendations in the list below.
- Before choosing a product, check that it's salon-grade, sulphate-free and not protein-based.

Products to Avoid
So now that you know what to use, let’s guide you through what NOT to use. Our first tip... stay away from supermarket brands! Remember, this is human hair so, these products can strip the hair cuticle. And because your topper or wig doesn’t grow, there are no natural oils to replenish the hair! Although it may seem a little more expensive to buy a salon brand, you probably only need to buy it once a year as you’re only washing once a month (unless you’re hitting the gym every day 😂).
Brands to Avoid
These brands don't work well with human hair toppers and wigs. These products can damage or degrade the quality of your piece. Please skip them when purchasing products for your wig or topper.
- Pantene: High levels of silicone which can strip the cuticle
- Olaplex: Olaplex is protein-based and can cause breakage and shedding on human hair wigs or toppers
- Head & Shoulders: This product can strip the colour from your piece.
- Herbal Essences: High levels of silicone which can strip the cuticle
- OGX: Can harm the quality of the hair
Ingredients/Types of Products to Avoid
In addition to skipping the brands listed above, there's specific ingredients to look out for in the products you choose.
- Moroccan oil (and other oils): Oils may be great for your bio hair, but you definitely want to skip them on your topper or wig. Oils can oxidise (change the colour) of your piece and can damage the integrity of the hair.
- Protein-based products: Protein is great when we're talking about bio hair, but with toppers and wigs it can break down the bond of the hair causing breakage. Skip the protein-based products (such as Olaplex).
- Hair Growth or Hair Rebuilding Products: These types of products can dry out the hair causing knotting and shedding.
- Bond Repair Products: These products are unnecessary for toppers and wigs and can cause knotting and tangling
